About
My name is Lusil Blekerman,
and I am the creator of The Soviet Flip.
This project began with a question that is personal, historical, and deeply tied to identity: How are narratives created? Who shapes them? And what happens when political language is repeated so often that it begins to feel like unquestioned truth?
As the daughter of parents who immigrated from the Soviet Union, I grew up understanding that history is never only about the past. It is memory, identity, and sometimes a political tool. The stories I heard at home, together with my own life in Israel, taught me the importance of asking difficult questions, examining sources, and returning to the moments when ideas, language, and public perceptions first began to change.
The Soviet Flip is a digital research project examining how the Soviet Union, through the political and ideological struggles of the Cold War, helped reshape international discourse surrounding Israel, Zionism, and modern Palestinian identity. It seeks to uncover layers of propaganda, ideology, and political memory, and to show how words, symbols, and intellectual frameworks can influence the way entire generations understand history and reality.
I created this project entirely on my own. From the research and collection of sources to the writing, editing, design, and development of the website. It is a fully independent project. It was neither commissioned nor funded by any institution, organization, political party, or interested party. It was created out of curiosity, a sense of personal responsibility, and a desire to understand and tell a story that, in my view, has not yet received the attention it deserves.
This project is dedicated to the State of Israel.
To the home to which the Jewish people returned after generations of exile, and to a country whose continued existence can never be taken for granted. It was created from the recognition that an old hatred did not disappear. It learned to speak a new language, adopt new narratives, and turn propaganda into accepted truth.
Defending this home requires more than protecting its borders.
It also requires defending the truth told about it.
